Gothic fonts have been used for centuries in manuscripts and newspapers — and now they are trending on Instagram, Discord, and gaming profiles. Here is your complete guide.
What Are Gothic / Blackletter Fonts?
Gothic fonts (also called Blackletter, Fraktur, or Old English) are a style of calligraphy that was the primary script in Europe from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. The style is characterized by angular, heavy strokes with decorative serifs and dramatic letterforms.
In Unicode, Gothic characters appear under the Mathematical Fraktur Symbols block. Each letter has a distinct blackletter appearance, making them perfect for dark aesthetic profiles and dramatic branding.

Fraktur vs. Old English — What's the Difference?
Both Fraktur and Old English are blackletter scripts, but they have different origins:
- Fraktur (Latin: fractus, "broken") was developed in Germany in the early 1500s and was the dominant German script until the 20th century. It has slightly more refined, flowing strokes.
- Old English (also called Textura or Quadrata) was used in medieval England and has a heavier, more angular look. It is the style commonly associated with gothic metalwork and newspaper mastheads.
In Unicode, both are approximated by the Mathematical Fraktur block. The "Bold Fraktur" style creates a heavier look closer to Old English, while standard Fraktur is lighter and more legible.
